Instruction on Usage of inhalers

The use of inhalers as a form of therapy for control of asthma is a very important skill that has to be Educated to the patient to maximize the therapeutic potential of the therapy (in other words, even if you prescribe inhalers, it could be useless with incorrect technique!

checklist of things to communicate for instruction

1.       GIEP

2.       Explanation of the equipment

3.       When to use the inhaler?

4.       Before usage…

a.        Shaking the MDI (Metered Dose inhaler)

b.       Open the cover of MDI

c.        Breathe in and out - to get ready for coordination of breath

d.       Stand up straight, with the canister

5.       Placement of the Inhaler to the mouth

a.        Must cover the mouthpiece entirely.

6.       Inhale and press the inhaler simultaneously

7.       Attempt to Keep inhaling for at least 10 counts

8.       Hold breath for 10seconds

9.       Exhale slowly.

10.    If more doses are needed, must rest for at least 1 minute.
